Hello everyone, and welcome to the second Weekly Nutwatch! I’m your host, QueenofSwords, and I want to thank you all for reading and enjoying last week’s column. This week’s Nutwatch is dedicated to all the hardworking people of science in the Evolution/Creation forum, because this week, the object of my affection is

The Young Earth Creation Club

The first thing I noticed about this website is the fact that it has a great many pictures as well as words to serve as links. All right, I understand that they’re trying to reach out to the illiterate - who better to recruit into a discussion of evolution and pseudoscience? - but why is the link for Vestigial Organs a little red Valentine-y heart? And “Evolutionism is a false religion” gets a picture of a skull (with an eyepatch) and crossbones. What’s this supposed to mean? That scientists working in the field of evolution moonlight as pirates?

This site is a compendium of the silliest things that have ever been gathered together under the leaky umbrella of creationism. It refers to “actual screams from Hell”, saying,

This link was not provided to viewers of our web site because we believe it's an authentic recording of Hades. There are good Biblical and scientific reasons to believe it is a hoax.

So there are good reasons to believe it’s a hoax, but they think it’s real – OK, why are they doing my work for me?

It could also be the result of a demonic deception, but that seems unlikely.

Yes, most demons are to be found in Elkhart, Indiana.

Still, hoax or not, there is some value in listening to it anyway. If one wants to imagine what it might sound like to live in torment for all of eternity, listen to the 30-second clip and ponder on that thought.

If anyone wants to imagine what it might be like to live in worse torment for all of eternity, please read the rest of the YECC website. And imagine believing things like :

Evidence that humans and dinosaurs coexisted :

Eye witness accounts by many people of creatures that are exactly like dinosaurs in appearance.

Such as iguanas.

The descriptions include not only sightings, but people actually hunting and killing the creatures.

Yes, it only requires about a hundred or so primitive people to take down a Velociraptor pack.

These stories have been documented all over the world in many different cultures.

Such as…?

They exist in the writings of several well-known ancient people,

This is really funny considering that, for example, Homer writes about the Cyclops and Pliny described “another race of men who are known as Monocoli, who have only one leg, but who are able to leap with surprising agility” (from Lands Beyond – L. Sprague de Camp and Willy Ley).

and have been documented by scientists as recently as a few years ago.

Such as…? The concept of references appears to be an alien one to the Young Earth Creation Club. Where do they get this stuff? Did someone send them pot brownies?

Moving on, did you know that God actually warns people about evolution? Of course, the word “evolution” is never actually mentioned in the bible, lest it give people ideas, but the good folks at YECC have realized that, in verses such as 2 Timothy 4:4 - “And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” – “truth” clearly refers to creationism, and “fables” to evolution.

To answer the burning question of Does evolutionism turn people away from God?, the website offers letters that have all the coherence of jojo-sa’s posts, and half the charm. The best reply was this:

I am very impressed with your well deigned and though out website. There is, however, one thing I need to point out. God didn't create the world in 7 days as it says in genesis. Actually, Satan created the world. Glad I could help.

This one has me lost for words. Seriously.

In Evolution is religion, the b.s. is piled on enthusiastically.

It does not take much effort to demonstrate that evolution is not science but religion.

This is good, because the authors don’t seem up to the mighty effort of searching for references.

Science, of course, involved observation, using one or more of our five senses (taste, sight, smell, hearing, touch) to gain knowledge about the world and to be able to repeat the observations. Naturally, one can only observe what exists in the present.

Naturally, once something occurs in the past, any traces of it are gone forever. The langoliers come along and eat it all up.

Webster's Dictionary defines religion as follows: "... cause, principle or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith." Surely, this is an apt description of evolution.

Webster’s Dictionary defines crap as follows: “…waste matter discharged from the body; especially : waste (as feces) discharged from the alimentary canal”. Surely, this is an apt description of this kind of creationism – and since many of the authors of the website give lectures, the description is correct : these statements are indeed proceeding from part of their alimentary canals. What more proof do you need?

Evolution is a belief system--a religion.

Laboratories should therefore be free of taxes.

…starting with the irrefutable evidence of the Scriptures,

Which don’t stand up to a child’s questioning.

we are told that in God the Father and His Christ" ... are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

So, when does/do He/They plan to reveal all these treasures? And how? A press conference?

There is no way any human mind can know all there is to know. But we have Someone who does. This ends our dilemma.

What’s the difference between “We don’t know” and “We don’t know, but there’s someone who does; however, he’s not telling and you can’t make him”?

We are in no doubt that what God has revealed in His Word is truthful and accurate.

I guess if you don’t doubt, you’ll never investigate to see if it is accurate or not.

He is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19) about anything.

What prevents creatures who are not men (women, aliens, advanced computers, etc.) from lying?

In time, we will know more fully.

Until then, do not, repeat, do not do any research.

He will add to our knowledge, but He will not change what His word has already revealed

It occurs to me that had people taken this attitude since the bible was first compiled, there wouldn’t even be an Internet for the YECC to spread their ludicrous viewpoint. But hey, that’s neo-Luddites for you.

In summary, this is one of the silliest YEC sites I’ve ever seen. The authors seem to think that copious Bible-quoting and evolution-bashing are an adequate substitute for a scientific theory, but half the time, they end up shooting themselves in the feet, insisting that nothing has changed from the beginning of creation. Yes, there were talking asses then and there are talking asses now.

Until next week, everyone!
